If you’re in the process of choosing a holiday home, you may be wondering whether a static caravan or a touring caravan is better for your needs.
Caravans are still one of the most popular types of holiday home, allowing you to create a holiday escape that’s all your own for a very reasonable price. However, is a static caravan or a touring caravan a better choice? We take a closer look at the pros and cons of each so that you can find your ideal fit and make a decision that’s best for your needs and lifestyle.
Static Caravans
Static caravans can’t be towed behind your car, so wherever you set them up, that’s where they will generally stay.
You can move your static caravan if you wish, however, it’s not as simple as hooking up a touring caravan to the back of your car.
The space and facilities within a static caravan are often better than those offered by touring caravans and you don’t need to worry about packing everything away each time you leave.
Static Caravans Pros
- Feels more like a home from home.
- Fully equipped. Just pack some clothes and head to your second home, easy!
- Bedrooms just as comfortable as those at home.
- Generally very spacious.
- Towing is not necessary.
- Secure and maintained by your chosen leisure park.
- Rent it out and earn some money back when you’re not staying there.
- Access to leisure park facilities and local attractions.
Static Caravans Cons
- Some leisure parks close over winter.
- Special transport is required to move it from one park to another.
Touring Caravans
Touring caravans offer more flexibility because you can tow them without the need for special transport.
If you prefer a holiday where you see multiple places in the one trip, this may be the better option for you.
Bear in mind, not everyone enjoys towing something behind their car, let alone a large caravan so think about that before you decide rather than have it as a costly afterthought.
Touring Caravans Pros
- Don’t need to stay in the same place.
- Available immediately since it can be stored at home.
- An array of caravan sites across the country.
- Visit and stay in more places.
- See more of the country or continent if you like to travel further afield.
Touring Caravans Cons
- Restrictions on keeping touring caravans on your driveway or street.
- Car engine needs to be powerful enough and stable enough for towing.
- Many people don’t enjoy towing a large vehicle behind their car.
- Many caravan parks close over winter.
- Some leisure parks are removing their facilities for touring caravans.
- Potential requirement for the storage of your caravan when not in use if you don’t have space at home.
- Complaints from neighbours if your caravan affects their view or how they feel it affects the area you live in.
Touring vs. Static: Making a Choice
Both touring and static caravans are great holiday home options but it would appear that most people tend to swap out their tourers for a static caravan after a few years. This is mainly because static caravans make it easier to go on holiday with children or a larger group.
Whatever you choose, you will easily find a number of parks and campsites around the country and farther afield to explore and enjoy.
